Comparison Test – 2024 Mazda CX-90 vs 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee L
Mazda versus Jeep which of their three-row SUVs is the right fit for family buyers?
Mazda versus Jeep which of their three-row SUVs is the right fit for family buyers?
The small CUV segment is swelling with nameplates as multiple automakers attempt to inject their own form of identity and purpose into a segment commonly defined by practicality and putting the actual art of driving very low on the priority list. While this certainly won’t bother the large bulk of family buyers that crave passenger space, it might leave some enthusiasts who were forced to sacrifice their sporty two-door coupe or performance sedan for the greater good feel left out. Mazda is attempting to change that with the Mazda CX-30 which attempts to bridge the gap and deliver some of …
The venerable MX-5 Miata has always been a guaranteed ticket for fun in Mazda showrooms. The tiny two-seater excels in the art of making driving slow fun with the car featuring exceptional handling and a six-speed manual that’s still one of the best that the segment has to offer. However, the MX-5 is also one of the few cars remaining in Mazda’s vehicle lineup as the Japanese automaker focuses on electrification and SUVs. Mazda also promised that a next-generation model is coming but does the current generation model have enough in the tank to help it stay ahead of the …
The Mazda 3 has always been the proverbial underdog in the compact car segment. While the segment itself has shrunken over the past few years as compact crossovers encroach on their territory with these models stealing customers away. As a result, automakers have slowly begun to kill off these models. Mazda is one of the few that’s still committed to the compact car wars and its Mazda 3 sedan and hatchback continue to be outliers in a rapidly shrinking segment. The Mazda 3 has always been a stylish car and while some of its DNA (especially on the hatchback) is …
Mazda has stated in the past that it remains committed to its plans for electrification while also boosting its presence in the SUV market at the same time. The CX-50 is a classic example of this in action with the station wagon-esque SUV giving the Japanese automaker a contender that can bring the fight to rivals like the Subaru Outback. The CX-50 has proven to be a strong seller for the brand, and the company is hoping to continue this momentum with the 2025 CX-50 Hybrid. Hybrid promises to sharpen CX-50’s green game A key change for 2025 is that …
Mazda’s commitment to the SUV segment has grown over the past few years. Models like the CX-50, CX-30, and even the flagship CX-90 are keen to show that the Japanese auto brand is willing to play with some of the most iconic high rollers in the segment. That includes the two-row side of the coin and Mazda has decided to fill a gap in its lineup with the all-new 2025 Mazda CX-70 which slots in between the CX-90 and the smaller CX-50 in the brand’s SUV lineup. It May Look Like A CX-90 But Look Closer At first glance, …
When Mazda confirmed that it was expanding its presence in the all-electric segment, it was safe to assume that the Miata sports car would eventually conform to this new reality. But while the company has so far not released formal details about what this means production-wise, it has done the next best thing with the unveiling of the Mazda Iconic SP Concept, which drew plenty of stares at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show. Iconic SP Concept Draws Inspiration From European Icons At first glance, it’s hard to ignore the fact that Mazda designers took inspiration from classic European sports …
When we last drove the 2024 Mazda CX-90 out in San Francisco, Mazda reps quickly pointed out just how much of a game changer this model would be for the company. The longitudinal rear-wheel drive platform is a radical departure from Mazda SUVs of the past, while the interior refocuses itself to be more luxurious than the outgoing CX-9. The CX-90 certainly has the goods to make a strong first impression, but does it hold up after long-term exposure? CX-90 PHEV Blends Organic Styling With Functional Lines Unlike other PHEV or EV models that tend to embrace styling that’s …
The 2023 Mazda MX-5 is an icon in the affordable sports car ranks. The tiny two-door is the classic example of what happens when you combine a solid platform with simple ergonomics and the fun that comes with a droptop. But what happens when the MX-5 is forced to go head to head with the 2023 Toyota GR86 when it comes time to decide between the two for a potential purchase? MX-5 and GR86 Are Both Finely Honed Instruments Of Fun Look past the Mazda’s ability to flip its lid up and down (the GR86 has no convertible …
Mazda has revealed its updates for the 2024 CX-5, which is sold alongside the wagon-like CX-50. The CX-5 is still a strong player for the company in terms of sales, and the CX-5’s updates aim to help it stay fresh against a growing pool of updated rivals. Cx-5 Carbon Turbo Edition Gets Zircon Sand Paint; Trim Ladder Gets Other Minor Changes As mentioned, Mazda is making minimal changes for the 2024 model year, with the returning CX-5 Carbon Turbo Edition getting Zircon Sand Metallic paint. Buyers that opt for the hue will also get Terracotta leather accents and other …
The 2024 Mazda CX-50 was designed to be an alternative to the Subaru Outback while also answering what would happen if some of Mazda’s premium touches were sprinkled onto a wagon-shaped crossover. Mazda is adding some minor updates to the 2024 model, which may seem undetectable at first glance, but aim to add incremental improvements to the driving experience for the new model year. Updated CX-50 Suspension Has Better Trail Capability One of the updates on hand for the new model year is updated dampers, with Mazda claiming that they have been retuned for the purpose of “encouraging more …
The 2023 Mazda CX-9 embodied the best and the worst characteristics in a flagship three-row SUV offering. One the one hand it featured an impressive amount of luxury, a sporty shape, and a hearty amount of performance from its engine lineup. On the other hand, the CX-9 also suffered from terrible electronics, horrible blind spots, and a third row that could barely haul people. The CX-9 also infamously lost to the Nissan Pathfinder when we subjected it to our television hauling test. The Japanese automaker claims that it has finally addressed these items and more with the 2024 Mazda CX-90. …
Mazda is preparing for a CUV-centric future, and while the recently launched CX-50 provided a glimpse into some of the new design and technology solutions that will play a role in Mazda products moving forward, the company knows that ultimately a flagship is needed for it to bring its sales to the next level. Mazda has solved this glaring problem with the unveiling of the all-new 2024 Mazda CX-90. Performance Takes Center Stage In 2024 CX-90, Artisan Red Paint Sparkles Usually, we would use this section to talk about the exterior styling, but Mazda reps made it clear that …
Mazda is in a very interesting place right now. The Japanese auto giant has always been known for offering buyers a unique blend of value and performance. However, changing sales dynamics and a surge in SUV demand have forced Mazda to alter its sales plans, with the company putting a greater emphasis on SUVs. That has come at the cost of some of their sedan entries, with the Mazda6 being axed a few years ago. The 2023 Mazda3 is now the lone sedan entry, but does the compact four-door still have the magic needed to help it retain its enviable …
The Mazda MX-30 promised to preview the EV future that Mazda is aiming to achieve with its vehicle lineup. But while the small CUV was stylish and offered an impressive array of sustainability in its interior, the EV’s paltry 100 miles of range between charges was arguably its biggest weakness and limited it to the California market. But Mazda is hoping that the all-new Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV will not only silence all the critics but also finally allow the MX-30 to blossom to its full potential. MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV IS Europe Only For Now, But U.S. Is Next …
The 2023 Mazda CX-5 continues to be one of the strongest-selling models in the brand’s growing pool of SUV entries, thanks to its ability to blend style with segment-blurring luxury. However, it’s facing traditional competition from rivals and an internal threat from the recently launched Mazda CX-50. Can the 2023 Mazda CX-5 still make a name for itself in this hotly contested segment or has its age finally caught up with it? CX-5 Styling Hides The Wrinkles Well While it’s no secret that the CX-5 is starting to age, you would be hard-pressed to find any obvious signs of …
Adding a much needed optional turbo to the 2023 CX-50 Turbo fills in a major gap that used to exist in the automakers lineup. All new for 2023, the CX-50 is similar in size to the CX-5. While the two are nearly identical in cargo capacity, the CX-50 is lower and wider. This gives is a sportier stance and might even improve the driving dynamics. Outside Up front the grill is very large, but not overly so. Slanted LED headlights give the CX-50 Turbo a menacing face. Amber LED strips low in the bumper function as turn signals and marker …
When we last met the 2023 Mazda CX-50 in the sun-kissed state of California, we put the SUV through its paces on mountain roads, trails, and even the coastal freeways that dotted our route. However, we were curious to see how the CX-50 could measure up on the opposite side of the country, especially in Michigan. CX-50 Does A Color Reversal In our first outing, we traveled through California in an example that was slathered in Polymetal Grey Paint. This time, we got to see the Zircon Sand Metallic hue in person and when viewed in the sunny weather that …
The compact sedan market can be a very interesting place to explore once you have a chance to look at some of the current offerings that are available for consumer consumption. Once relegated to cheap econoboxes that favored thriftiness over performance (hot hatches like the GTI excluded) the segment has rapidly morphed into a different breed with luxury, design, and technology rapidly becoming the key benchmarks as they attempt to stand out against CUVs. The 2022 Mazda 3 and the 2022 Honda Civic Si are two such examples, with both trying to appeal to a broader swath of the market. …
When Mazda first confirmed that it was expanding its SUV lineup, we were curious to see precisely what Mazda had in mind. The CX-30 was the first in what Mazda called the “CX” family of utilities, with the model not only replacing the axed CX-3 but also proving that the model was more than the sum of its Mazda 3 sourced parts. Naturally, the company is thinking bigger this time around and has revealed the second member of the gap-filling family, the 2023 CX-50. But does it successfully follow up on the solid praise the CX-30 has received? Or is …
Mazda has been on a mission to completely revamp its utility vehicle lineup with the company recently unveiling the CX-50 which is slotted above the CX-30 utility. The company is continuing to try and fill every gap possible in its attempts to maximize profits. While the company is still keeping a couple of them behind a veil of secrecy, Mazda chose to provide a glimpse of the next piece of the puzzle, the CX-60. CX-60 Is Moving On Up The CX-60 continues Mazda’s push into bigger segment categories and is slotted above the CX-50. The lone image that Mazda …
When Mazda announced that it was going to double down on the utility market, we were intrigued. The Japanese auto giant was already in the midst of a shift towards utilities. Still, it had a lot of ground to make up in the face of rivals that already had a sizable headstart in prepping for the strong demand in utility models. One of the cogs of this broader sales machine is the CX series, and Mazda has now given us our first glimpse of what one would look like with the unveiling of the all-new 2023 Mazda CX-50. CX-50 …
Mazda has admitted in the past that it plans to rapidly expand its lineup of utility models as the performance-minded car giant shifts its priorities to take greater advantage of the recent surge in SUV demand. Various rumors helped provide glimpses into this future, but Mazda has finally confirmed it, revealing that it will not only bring an all-new CX-50 into the family but that it will also bring four more utility models into the fold. Upcoming CX-50 Is A Sign Of Things To Come While Mazda is choosing to wait until November to reveal the CX-50 in full, …
The Mazda CX-5 is one of the few in the utility vehicle segment that has managed to nail the perfect balance of sport-inspired performance and value-focused luxury that can actually blur the line between mainstream and luxury when equipped properly. But even the ultimate jack of all trades needs to be refreshed once in a while, and the company has unveiled the updated 2022 CX-5, which follows closely on the heels of its recently unveiled Chinese market cousin. Subtle Evolution Focuses On The Essentials The exterior styling of the 2022 CX-5 shares a lot of its basic traits with …
The 2021 Mazda 6 is a reflection of what once defined the automotive world. In a bygone era, the four-door sedan was king, and the first utility vehicles were crude rugged beasts that could prove their worth out on the trail but had little going for them out in urban settings. But technology has advanced, and this surge of advancement has allowed utilities to surge into the forefront of the buying conversation. As a result, sedans are slowly dying out, and sadly the Mazda 6 joins the growing list of monikers being retired in the quest for higher sales. We …
This week has been filled with automakers revealing ambitious plans and weaving roadmaps that aim to help provide a glimpse into what automakers are thinking over the next few years. Yesterday, Lincoln looked to the stars when detailing its green vehicle plans. Today, Mazda has unveiled its plans for an electrified future with the Japanese auto giant preparing to achieve full carbon neutrality by 2050. To achieve this, the company has to perform certain steps, and it has detailed some of the early ones in a release earlier today. Eight Green Models To Spearhead Green Push Mazda plans to …
Luxury, it seems, is becoming more of a factor in the world of utility vehicles. Once considered a backburner item in the minds of mainstream utility buyers, the ability to have more coddling features has rapidly morphed into a key SUV keystone. But which SUV can play the role of value-focused luxury entry best? To find out, we picked two SUVs (the 2021 Ford Escape Titanium and the 2021 Mazda CX-5 Signature) and put them through a battery of tests to try and find out which one reigns supreme? Both have benefited from minor updates since their last battle, and …
Rumors have swirled around the water cooler at Mazda for a while now. Still, the company has finally confirmed what many long suspected, and that’s the discontinuation of the Mazda6 sedan and the CX CUV in the U.S. after the 2021 model year concludes. Responding To The Winds Of Change While Mazda stated in its press release that “It’s proud of the performance, design, quality, and safety they contributed” to the company as a whole, the firm is making its decision to align itself with current consumer demand. In the case of the Mazda6, it will be another casualty …
Are you an enthusiast that’s been waiting for Subaru to release the updated WRX? While Subaru has so far been quiet about when it will do that, the folks at Mazda are hoping that you will perhaps embrace their alternative, the 2021 Mazda3 Turbo. This spirited Mazda has always been a favorite here at Car-Revs-Daily, and the company has finally mated the new engine to the 3’s all-wheel-drive system. But is this proverbial match in heaven a true four-season contender capable of bringing the fight to the Subaru? We were eager to find out. Exterior Styling Still Has The …
In a world where many CUVs appear to have been crafted out of soulless toasters and dryers, the 2020 Mazda CX-9 has emerged as a very vibrant exception to the rule. The exterior styling looks like it was lifted from a sports car, and the interior blurs the line between mainstream and luxury. But in a segment where the pool is rapidly becoming a very crowded place, Mazda’s biggest utility offering needs to be sharper than ever. But does it succeed in drawing attention to itself? Or does it miss the mark in other regards? Sultry Exterior Styling Makes …
The 2020 Mazda MX-5 has always been a very interesting entry for Mazda. It serves as a very budget friendly option for those looking to enter the sports car segment and it has been a value focused icon in the segment since its debut in the 1990s. During this period though the Toyota Supra was morphing into its most potent form and was a very potent performance car entry. However, volatile economic factors and currency exchange rates between the U.S. dollar and the Yen forced the Supra to take a brief respite from production while the MX-5 continued on. But …
When it comes to straddling the line between mainstream and entry level, we’ll admit that Mazda is a very hard act to follow. When you look at the company’s pricing ladder as well as the segments it competes in, it’s easy to write it off as a mainstream luxury brand. However, the interior designs recently make it clear that Mazda is shooting far above its weight class when it comes to this particular category. With sedans being pinched for sales and attention by a growing army of SUV and CUV entries, they have to embrace new ways of maintaining the …
Shopping for an SUV these days can be a very difficult endeavor for many buyers. There are a wide range of models, trims, and other items all vying to try and get your hard earned dollars when it comes time to sign on the dotted line. While the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has certainly put a crimp on new vehicle sales across the board, many of the local dealerships we visited in Metro Detroit have reported steady SUV and CUV sales. We decided to compare the 2020 Mazda CX-5 Signature and the 2020 Ford Escape Titanium to see how they would …
When Mazda first began revamping their SUV lineup a few years ago, the Japanese automaker made it clear that it was keen on outdoing established rivals with a healthy blend of style and technology. This includes addressing a noticeable hole in their lineup, with the all new CX-30 crossover. But can the newest member of the Mazda family be the perfect middle ground for budget focused CUV buyers? Mazda 3 Underpinnings Highlight Sensual Design: The CX-30 is essentially a lifted version of the Mazda3, but like the sedan and hatchback it shares its platform with, the CX-30 has a …
The Mazda3 is the spirited underdog in the compact car segment. When the current generation model first made its appearance back in 2019, it was perhaps the most comprehensive effort yet at making the budget focused 3 into a true contender in the segment. With expressive exterior design, a cabin that blurs the line between luxury and affordability, and a chassis to envy for. The Mazda3 certainly had a head start in its quest to dethrone the Volkswagen Golf from the top of the sales charts. With such a strong start for 2019, what could Mazda engineers do to help …
Mazda has long been a persistent believer in the potential of the rotary engine. The rotary (also known as the Wankel engine) has been around for awhile, but following a brief period in the 1970s where the novel engine was viewed as a potential solution to improving fuel economy, the engine has largely languished in the background. The last production model to utilize one was (unsurprisingly) the long axed Mazda RX-8 sports car. But Mazda has not given up on the idea of using it, and a recently unearthed patent appears to suggest that Mazda is closer to reviving the …
In the world of hatchbacks, few have had the underdog effect that the venerable Mazda3 has had during its long run in production. While the Volkswagen Golf has reigned supreme over the segment, the Mazda3 has been a persistent underdog, a potent disruptor that always aimed to try and snatch the top spot from the talented German. While the Golf always managed to ward off these challenges thanks to its superior, interior craftsmanship, and more polished engines, the 3 bided its time, and gradually improved some of its flaws. But with the departure of the recently axed Ford Focus from …
A lot of people love European vehicles. The quality, the ride, the design, the feeling that you’re in something special – it’s all good, and it’s all there. So, we often get asked, “what’s a good entry-level European sedan?” Well, the best Euro sedan for the money right now is… the 2019 Mazda 3. Yes, the Mazda 3. We’ve just spent a week in the all-new Mazda 3 sedan (a hatchback is available, too), and it is impressive. Now we’ve always liked the 3 – a lot of enthusiasts we know who’d like a BMW or an Audi end up …
Is there anything that a huge lump of horsepower cannot solve?! The 2019 Mazda CX-5 went from a top-5 crossover in our books to the best of the best. All thanks to a generous dollop of turbo horsepower – and especially torque! Mazda’s goal for 2019 is to keep the CX-5 sales party going at full steam. They are achieving this via not one but two new engine options in addition to the base 2.5-liter with 187 horsepower. There is a 2.2-liter turbodiesel offered in the USA for the first time and then this all-new turbo gas powerplant we so …
The CX-5 crossover is a big deal to Mazda – it’s the best-selling vehicle they have in the U.S., and having sold over 2 million units worldwide it’s a bona fide success. It’s a well-loved product, too. Having been here since 2012, it got a nice refresh when we tested the 2017 CX-5, and we felt that it was still our favorite small crossover – it’s a great drive. But time moves on, some big hitters have come our way, including the all-new 2019 RAV4, which we loved for its looks, performance, and hybrid efficiency, all in one package. Mazda …
It’s no secret that Mazda’s CX-5 has emerged as a very key player for the Japanese car maker for the past several years. Once known for having a very car focused lineup over 10 years ago, Mazda has been very quick to embrace the recent shift towards CUV and SUV entries, with the CX-3 and the CX-9 being just two examples of how the Hiroshima based company has responded to this abrupt shift in buyer demand. However, it is ultimately the CX-5 that has emerged as the key cog in Mazda’s plans to sharpen up its position in the utility …
Perfection, how hard is it to indeed update an icon that has been winning over the hearts of enthusiasts for the past several decades? Mazda engineers had the unenviable task of bringing even more magic into the ND platformed MX-5 (aka the Miata,) which already had the formula for fun sports car ownership firmly baked into its DNA when it originally debuted in 2016. But is it really worth it to trade up to a 2019 MX-5 versus its older predecessors? We were keen to find out, and see if this newly refreshed MX-5 does indeed have the tools necessary …
No big shock here, small CUV/Crossover/SUV’s are all the rage. Not only a nice, city-friendly- sized version of larger SUV’s, with their low prices, enhanced fuel efficiency, and utility, they’re knocking the stuffing out of the small car segment as well. And now Mazda is going after the affordable sports car. Which is pretty interesting. With the Miata, they pretty much own the affordable sports car segment. But the 2019 Mazda CX-3 looks like they’re going after one of their own. So, it’s a sports car? Well, it looks like one. It certainly comes from the same family of the …
With the 2019 Mazda CX-5 waiting in the wings with its all new turbocharged four cylinder engine, and a whole host of refinement updates, the 2018 Mazda CX-5 has the unenviable task of holding down the fort and maintaining the strong legacy that the model has built for itself since it made its first appearance several years ago. But the SUV and CUV wars are changing at a rapid fire pace with seemingly a new model being unveiled almost every week. But can the 2018 CX-5 succeed in its minor but jey supporting role? Or will the 2019 CX-5 have …
When an automotive enthusiast looks at the 2018 Mazda 6 Signature, quiet and refined may not be the first characteristics that come to mind. This is partially due to prior generation Mazda 6 models, which boasted commendable levels of performance, but with much more noise than many of its rivals. The 2018 Mazda 6 aims to exorcise this image, but without ruining the basic delectable bits that lurked beyond the high decibel levels. But can the 2018 Mazda 6 pull off this trick? Or does it still fall short of being a true disrupter to mid-size sedan icons like the …
The current Mazda 3 is already a very impressive offering in the compact car segment. Combining seductive styling with impressive performance hardware and surprising levels of technology, the 3 has emerged as a very viable entry in a segment that is facing pressure from CUV entries. So how do you make an already good thing even better? By making changes and updates where it maters the most. It all starts with the all new platform which allows the 2019 version to be slightly lower and longer than before, with the wheelbase being stretched by a full inch. In a …
Some say the sedan is dead, that the SUV/Crossover buried it. We say poppycock. (Actually, no one says poppycock anymore, but it keeps us out of trouble with the language nannies). Proof? Look at the aggressive tack we’re seeing right now, with an all-new sporty Toyota Camry, an all-new Honda Accord with available detuned Civic Type R motor, and all-new Nissan Altima with a world’s first Variable displacement turbo engine. Sedans are back and they’re mad as heck. With all this new sheetmetal on sale, it’s got to be tough for a not-so-new sedan like the Mazda 6 to keep …
Very rare double best-of winner for the Concept Lawn of 2018 Pebble Beach Concours! The Salaff C2 wins most arresting face by a mile, and also scores wildest concept tail! Very fantastic design ideas virtually pouring from all the C2’s aggressive cutlines. Carlos Salaff is already a favorite designer for many car buffs. He is the man behind the ill-fated Mazda Furai concept, which was a 450HP rotary LMP2 racecar as well as 2040 design preview. This latest exercise is a grass-roots, hand-crafted effort from the artist’s base in Italy. Humble-ish underpinnings from a Gallardo do nothing to tamp my …
I say Miata, you say convertible. Or roadster. Drop top. You get the idea. For most people, a Miata is a 2-seater convertible with a folding fabric (or vinyl) top that lets you take in the sun, the stars, the breeze. But there’s a percentage of people that like a Miata with a hardtop. Those that live in 4 seasons, but want to drive their Mazda year-round. Or those in environments where the added security of hard roof makes you less of target. Racers need them too – look at the prices for a hardtop – sans Miata –on Craigslist …
Want to know the true reason why nobody should suffer driving a car they don’t love? And also the reason why car shoppers are fools to make up their mind online instead of on the test drives? The shining example for both is the delightful 2018 Mazda3 GT. Here is a car that will hit 35-mpg on the highway and keep your payments easily below $300 a month. All while having truly fun performance and actual torque to keep you ahead of traffic! Driving the Mazda3 for a week is like a slap in the face or a dunk in …
Admittedly, I’m not much a mid-size car guy. I like pickups and SUVs with 4×4. However, driving around in the 2017.5 Mazda6 Grand Touring edition, it didn’t take me long to understand why I keep hearing good things about this car. The 2017.5 Mazda6 is one of two cars Mazda offers with the Mazda3 being the smaller of the two. It competes with the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and other mid-size cars. Mazda offers the 6 in three models: Sport, Touring and Grand Touring and all the models share a 2.5L 184 horsepower inline-four engine. This model year is also …
What makes the Mazda 3 such a good value in the compact car segment? It’s stylish good looks are definitely a good start along with an interior that has always offered occupants a near premium driving experience. But with many of its rivals either upping their aesthetic game, or offering more performance and fundamental value. Can the 2018 Mazda 3 keep up with the changing landscape while still offering the compelling DNA that keeps Mazda loyalists coming back for more? To find out, we revisited this old favorite to see for ourselves if the Mazda 3 has aged into a …
As the CUV market continues to grow in importance, the diverse selection of models, sizes, and trims can sometimes make the process of buying one of these vehicles a daunting endeavor. While the old adage “bigger is better” still resonates in the minds of many buyers, is it really indeed better? To find out, we went behind the wheel of two of Mazda’s bread and butter CUV entries to find out if size really does matter, and whether other factors emerge in the quest for the perfect family hauler? 2018 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring It’s no secret that Mazda’s …
When we last met the 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF, we praised the fastback for offering a hardtop alternative to the venerable soft top variant, as well as giving customers better protection from the elements. However, the one thing we missed was the doses of sporty character that other MX-5’s are known for (mainly due to our tester being a luxury oriented Grand Touring model.) To find out if the wait was indeed worth it, we spent some time with the MX-5 Club to see if it could stand out in any discernible way from its slightly more sedate cousin. …
The compact crossover segment has a ‘masculinity gap.’ There are more than a dozen of these cute utes on the market, but none of them really looks or drives manly. Yes, the Audi Q3 and Honda CR-V are good cars. But do they increase or decrease their driver’s sex appeal? Among the dudes of the world coming up from econoboxes and blah mid-size sedans, CUVs are theoretically perfect machines. A bit of all-weather ability here, a dash of extra practicality there. Like it or not, people buy cars based on strange psychology. Men and women are usually both fine with …
The legacy of Scion continues to permeate throughout Toyota showrooms. While the logos, marketing material, and the fancy displays have long since been deposited in the dark corners of history, several of its models continue to linger in Toyota showrooms. One of these is the budget friendly iA sedan. Designed and engineered with help from Mazda, the iA was Scion’s last ditch effort at attracting young first time buyers before the rug was pulled from under it. Will the addition of a Toyota badge and a new name allow the Yaris iA to still fulfill its mission in life? Or …
Tokyo is full of EVs and stand-tall vans per usual. But this year the eco flavor has a lot more speed and outdoorsiness. Cars like the Nissan IMx — a preview of a Juke replacement running 400+ electric ponies. Taller ride height and gravel-busting looks are part of the Subaru VISIV concept’s rallytough looks. We even love the new Mitsubishi Mazda is on a roll with its gorgeous Vision Coupe concept — a light teaser of where the humble Mazda6 is going in the future. Same for the sexy shrink-wrapped KAI Concept for its 2019 Mazda3 flavors. Cars like the …
You know I really wanted this scoop because all these came from Mazda’s Japanese media site! The new Vision Coupe is a breathtaking, cab-backward look at a future Mazda sedan. Its sharky nose and pert tail are almost like an MX-5 saloon car! In the best ways. The KAI is a look at the upcoming Mazda3 refresh. It takes sleek, slinky curves to a new level. A fully shrink-wrapped package with sport stance like a Golf R. But with half the roof. Both stunning. Watch this space for updates and real photos once the cars debut on stage at the …
Imagine the best kart track ever – inside the amazing Road America racetrack itself. Then swap the karts for real cars. And race them against the stopwatch in rapid-fire rotations of drivers! It was an squeely good time with the class of 2017’s new and special pocket rockets. A big variety in power, drivetrain layout and body style: everything from the Abarth 500C to MX-5 RF and 370Z Heritage Edition. Hyundai’s new Elantra Sport joined the fun, as did a ragtop Miata, 124 Abarth, Toyota 86 and VW Golf R. They were all a laugh riot around …
When it comes to sporty driving, the folks at Mazda have always had a knack for balancing sporty virtues with enough value and style to make their vehicles a compelling choice for budget minded enthusiasts. For a while, that tradition didn’t necessarily apply to their SUV/CUV offerings. But with the recently revamped CX-5 and CX-3 blowing a blast of fresh air into this segment, it was only fitting that the CX-9 would embrace this wind of change with vigor. It’s tough being Mazda. After all, in the automotive world, you’re a small company, up against giants like Toyota, Ford, and Nissan. And even though you’re a famous sports car maker, you need to compete in the big-money segments like small crossovers to survive. But Mazda did more than just compete. With the original CX-5, Mazda made one of the best, most fun to drive small crossovers on the market. But time moves on, and Mazda has to as well. Will Mazda’s new CX-5 be another winner, or will it suffer from sophomore slump? Well, first of all, it’s not …
It’s no secret that the Mazda MX-5 is always a welcome visitor in the Car-Revs-Daily offices. We have sampled the roadster in many locales, and even had seat time behind the wheel of its Italian cousin the Fiat 124 Spider. In short, the MX-5 (in either guise) has become an iconic example in how to make a proper two seat roadster. However, we also like the idea of adding something new to this proven recipe, and we were quite excited when Mazda unveiled the RF version. But does the addition of a folding hardtop roof add a bit more pep …
The 2017 Mazda6 is an affordable midsize car for those seeking something better. A car with premium handling, design and cabin feel. Yet with pricing that undercuts its spiritual Audi and BMW rivals by tens of thousands. We’ve been a big fan of the Mazda6 for years now. Our reco of the car has even led more than a few friends and neighbors to buy one. And for most of those people, the car was not even on their radar. So to answer the question of ‘Why don’t more people buy the Mazda6?‘ the answer is a lack of …
Is the Mazda CX-9 a Miata for 7? It’s an interesting thing. Used to be, you had needs, you bought a vehicle that fit those needs. Things changed when SUV’s got popular. Suddenly, if you needed a minivan, but didn’t want to be seen in a minivan, you could get something cooler. No more settling. Well, that opened the floodgates. Pickup truck that’s decked out like a luxury sedan? You can get them with more cow on the inside than you can tow on the outside. EV’s that will stomp all over supercars? Here’s your Tesla. Convertible Crossovers? How …
When we last met the Mazda CX-3, we praised its ability to bring Mazda style fun and flair to a segment that is steadily getting more and more crowded with entries from various automakers. With the segment also booming in sales and overall demand, choosing the right CUV for your driveway can be the most important decision many growing families face. With that said, does the Mazda CX-3 still have what it takes to win a spot in your driveway? To find out we went behind the wheel of a second CX-3, and crunched the numbers to see how it …
I love endurance prototype racecars. They take truly concept-level ingenuity in aero and grip to the streets. Well, to the road courses and banked ovals of the racing circuits! This new RT24-P from Mazda is a pretty magnificent specimen for blending on-brand design cues with the mandates of any race class. The RT24-P is designed to dominate the top class of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship — a new class called DPi, for Daytona Prototype International. Certainly not quick or catchy names in this new series. But hey, it is an endurance challenge! The RT24-P name itself means the “Road …
Mazda’s new 2016 CX-9 is the largest of their three SUV offerings, and in fact, the largest Mazda vehicle they have ever made. The larger dimensions are put to good use, as there is ample room for driver and passenger in the front, very good leg and headroom for second row passengers, and even decent, if not spacious, room for average size adults in the third row. We had a chance to spend a week with the top of the line Signature AWD model. Mazda threw everything it had into this one, and it came with a very un-Mazda …
Mazda has had an extremely successful compact car in their lineup with the Mazda3. It has won awards ranging from Car and Driver’s prestigious 10Best list to winning comparison tests for its ride quality, comfort, and interior. Since the current-generation Mazda3 has been out for three years, it is time for it to once again raise the standards in the compact class. Looking at the exterior, the 2017 Mazda3 receives minor changes to the vehicle’s KODO – Soul of Motion design. These include a bolder grille, available LED headlights and tail lights, and a redesigned bumper for the …
When Mazda first unveiled the current generation MX-5 Miata back in 2014, it signaled a radical shift in focus, with Mazda designers breathing newfound life into a car that some thought had lost its way since it was first introduced in 1989. With bolder exterior styling, and a renewed emphasis on weight shedding, the newly rejuvenated MX-5 promises to blaze its own chapter in the sports car ranks. Our last sampling of the MX-5 was out on the track, but can it succeed out in the real world? The exterior styling of the MX-5 embraces newfound levels of …
There are people out there not enamored by the all-new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata. And you can include me. Well, sort of. Let me explain. First of all, a disclosure. A well-worn 1990 Miata lives in the Ben Lewis garage. I’ve had it over 15 years. And yes, it’s red. So I’m a fan. And when the Second Gen (NB to you and me) bowed in 1999, I liked it. But I was amazed that even though it only lost an inch of legroom, I didn’t fit comfortably. And really, I’m not that tall. I was personally happier when the …
The CUV sales boom is in full force. Many automakers are revamping their product plans to take advantage of this renewed level of demand. Mazda is one of these companies and has invested large amounts of money and effort into revitalizing its CUV lineup. The 2016 Mazda CX-3 is the first fruit of this renewed effort, and promises to bring Mazda’s trademark levels of sportiness and vigor to the compact CUV segment. But has this focus on driving perfection blunted its capabilities in the process? The exterior styling of the CX-3 incorporates many of the cues that made their debut …
In the spring of 1971, I was almost finished with my freshman year at the University of Iowa, and it was time for me to get my first new car. My father and I were to split the cost. His idea of the perfect car for me was a low mileage, 1969 Chevrolet Impala, 4-door. And my idea was a 1971 MGB rag top. While my friends were into muscle cars of the time like Mustangs, Camaros, Chargers and Barracudas, I was more interested in small British cars that, while not fast, were known for handling prowess, rather than …
2016 Mazda 6 i Grand Touring By Ken “Hawkeye” Glassman I always look forward to getting a Mazda dropped off in my driveway for a week’s worth of driving. You can always count on a Mazda to deliver three things: peppy performance, great gas mileage, and outstanding handling. Our test car was the top of the line model, the Grand Touring model. As all Mazda 6 models, it comes with a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder direct injection, variable valve timing engine with a very high 13:1 compression ratio and is designed to use unleaded gas. The engine makes 184 horsepower and …
A surprise hit for many automotive journalists, the 2016 Mazda CX-5 has been called out for its “impressive efficiency, responsive handling and bold style.” Add this journalist to the list of those pleasantly surprised by the CX-5. It is really, really good. One of the first things grabbing you about the CX-5 is the exterior styling and, more specifically, the nose. The look is almost a take on a Mercedes-Benz GLE which is a big compliment to the Mazda designers. Fortunately, it doesn’t stand out as a direct knock-off and the CX-5 retains its own personality with a well-designed front …
RF does not stand for Really Fast. But it could stand for Really Fun! In reality, it is the new badge for the MX-5 hardtop. This power retractable targa panel slides behind the new B-pillar uprights in back and atop the trunk. Scratch that: the entire roof actually folds under the rising uprights behind each seat. These buttresses lift up and let the hardtop fold away. This keeps a wind deflector in back with the top down, but does not appear to let the rear glass or roof move individually: only as a unit. It is not exactly as clean …
Official debut of the quite sexy CX-9 crossover from Mazda. This three-row truck goes seriously upmarket outside and in, yet also high-tech with a new turbo powertrain. This new 2.5-liter engine makes 250-horsepower and a stout 310-pound-feet of torque, well adept at chasing the Volvo XC90 T6 or Toyota Highlander. 2017 Mazda CX-9 ALL-NEW MAZDA CX-9 THREE-ROW CROSSOVER DEBUTS AT 2015 LOS ANGELES AUTO SHOW 18/11/15 CX-9 offers elevated experience with innovative technologies, new SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine and premium, authentic materials When the Mazda CX-9 made its world debut back in 2006, it was an epiphany: …
The CX-3 looks incredible in person and drives very nicely as well. The matching LED projectors, DRLs and foglamps are a particular highlight in this compact crossover segment. The cabin, while narrow and slightly tight in back, delivers an excellent drive position and effective Eco/Normal/Sport drive modes. We have major gripes with Mazda USA at the moment, so are holding off recommending the CX-3 beyond this video brief. 2016 Mazda CX-3 GT – HD First Drive Video 2016 Mazda CX-3 GT Review
Some handy shortcuts in the spec of the 2016 MX-5 in the UK: the Sport Recaro Limited Edition picks the best options from the standard kit, plus adds a gloss-black bodykit and unique diamond-cut alloy wheels. Although just 17-inchers, these really fill out the fenders quite well. The premium paints like this Ceramic Metallic or Soul Red are no-charge for the 25k MX-5 Recaro edition, which is available for order now across Britain. 2016 Mazda MX-5 Recaro Edition MAZDA REVEALS ALL-NEW MAZDA MX-5 SPORT RECARO LIMITED EDITION 11/11/15 Limited Edition range-topping model joins the all-new Mazda MX-5 line …
2016 Mazda MX-5 Spyder Mazda Reveals Extreme Lightweight Design Concepts at 2015 SEMA MX-5 Concepts Display Two Different Takes on Staying True to Pure, Lightweight Sports Car Philosophy LAS VEGAS (November 3, 2015) – Mazda revealed two design concepts today at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, based on its all-new 2016 MX-5 Miata—MX-5 Spyder and MX-5 Speedster—demonstrating two vastly different takes on lightweight, open-air performance. Lightweight. Fun-to-drive. Roadster. Those three tenets have served as the foundation for the Mazda MX-5 Miata since its 1989 introduction and continue to serve the new fourth-generation model. Focused, lightweight engineering is a guiding …
Some sweet strange at the 2015 Tokyo Auto Show! Fave reveals include the NC2020 in red, plus the Yamaha Sports Ride concept — which is a mini Pagani for all intents and purposes. Of course, the Mazda RX-Vision is also a fantastic indication of future turbo rotaries returning to the Japanese supercar battle of 2018. Picture it: GT-R vs Supra FT-1 vs NSX vs RX-7 Turbo! On the other side of the power spectrum, the Honda S660 and Daihatsu Copen have potential fresh competition beyond the Yamaha above in a mini Toyota sportscar: the S-FR Concept. Or the mysterious Kode-9 …
A few months ago, Toyota and Mazda announced a major partnership in vehicle development and production. The Mazda2’s conversion into the US-exclusive four-door Scion iA is a huge hit, and the two Japanese rivals seemed eager to deepen the bond. There may have been an equity swap to even seal their newly-strong link. But details on the ground were — and are — very secret. What are they working on together? PART ONE: The S-FR As the months pass, we have a much clearer idea: specific Toyota variants of Mazda platforms. The S-FR sports coupe for the Tokyo auto show …
Freshly back from a track drive with the 2016 MX-5 Experience tour — and have some serious vehicular brilliance to report! As you might know already, or simply expect, this latest MX-5 is an absolutely breathtaking evolution on the light/rear-drive roadster theme. Improving upon a genre the Miata defines conclusively? Not easy to do — especially with firm price and power caps limiting headline performance numbers. Yet the latest engineering, style and handling excellence from Mazda has done wonders for the MX-5. After all, if Mazda can make the CX-5 into a lively steer, the SkyActiv mantra should really make …
Mazda just had a very eventful week in Frankfurt: three Automotive Brand Contest awards for the CX-3, KODO Bike Concept, and grand prize for the KODO Design language. Very impressive results. It looks like the Mazda Design ‘Car as Art’ installation at Milan design week this Spring left quite the impression on the German Design Council, the award sponsors. Held in Frankfurt, the awards capped off an eventful week in Deutschland: they unveiled an all-new concept car. The Koeru concept reveal shows upmarket ambitions as a full-size SUV with gorgeous lines and sporty handling. Along with the …
Mazda’s new MX-5 looks stellar. We cannot wait one minute longer to try it out. Is that how you feel too? You might be in luck! There are five or so dates left on the initial MX-5 Experience tour: Atlanta today Sept 11 and tomorrow Sept 12, followed by more dates in New Jersey, Texas and Arizona. There is no RSVP list and no $2k fee, a la Jaguar and Lamborghini. First come first served! Looks like the stations to try out the MX-5 are autocross, braking and hot track lap. Mmmmm! Seriously debating the six-hour drive to Atlanta…. forgive …
Twin glory spires at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this year are capped by the LeMans-winning Mazda 787B and the 2015 Mazda LM55 Vision Gran Turismo — two kindred spirits together in the metal publicly for the first time. This is a huge year for Mazda. The lineup is stronger than ever, while the new MX-5 and all-new CX-3 compact SUV are creating more buzz than ever for the Japanese sportscar brand. The Central Sculpture and OEM title sponsorship for Mazda at Goodwood is a big vote of confidence in their growth strategy. Typically this high-dollar placement has gone …
As you might know, we get really excited to find any Japanese car in the high-dollar auction world. The Monterey sale is the Super Bowl for car collectors. Tens of thousands of wealthy individuals descend on Pebble Beach and Carmel for a week-long extravaganza of past, present and future exotics. This makes the atmosphere fairly competitive even outside the fast-talking auctions. Polish up your current ride and eyeball what might become your next? A few Datsun roadsters, Skyline’s and Toyota 2000GT’s are the only regular attendees of the oceanfront Cali spectacular — but are joined this year by an exceptionally …

Love at first drive … in the Mazda CX-5! First things first: what are the Best of Awards? That is our highlight for cars and trucks of the year – but given out as-needed whenever we get behind the wheel of a truly fantastic new vehicle. The Mazda3 won this acclaim last year, and the 2016 Mazda6 is on track to nab one as well. In order to rise up to the title, a car needs to be so excellent that it really knocks your socks off outside, inside and on the road. But mostly on the road, at full …
Racers worldwide have made lightening Mazda MX-5’s more than an art or craft: there is a science to shedding grams and gaining pace. This 2009 concept from Mazda’s European R&D center is a serious and comprehensive speedster conversion and custom strip-out. Once totally bare, the full MX-5 Superlight was resprayed in a Japanese Racing white pearl. The color and the contrast details for the hood and double bubble rollbars make the MX-5 Superlight’s proportions even more intensely rear-drive. A favorite detail is the brake light LED lining those integrated roll hoops. 2009 Mazda MX-5 Superlight Concept Mazda MX-5 Superlight Concept …
This new MX-5 Club is looking incredible! With gunmetal grey wheels, black mirror caps and aero extras all around, the MX-5 Club will be the most stylish and sporty of the full MX-5 range. The order books are open now with pricing from $25,000 — so we’d pencil in around $29,000 for the loaded Club with its sweet additions. The BBS forged wheels and front Brembo brakes will be optional, but well worth their extra strength and performance chops! You might be wondering about those sweet LEDs in the lower front flanks of the MX-5 Club — they are special …
As a small and independent manufacturer, Mazda cannot really afford to flub the design of one of its main production models. Careful design feedback was solicited on a global scale between 2005 and 2010, when the firm rolled out almost a dozen wild concept cars. As sort of a focus-group-by-fire, these concepts showed some good ideas, some bad ideas, and overall the results informed the latest generation of gorgeous Mazda6, fairly cool Mazda3 and very stylish upcoming MX-5 and CX-3. As a crossover coupe with two massive doors, this Kazamai concept proved two things: that rear-drive proportions are always stunning …
Let’s imagine you want to make a supercar. The normal way to achieve massive performance is a giant engine. But is there an alternative route to supercar speed? The TAIKI concept believes there is. The little ticks down the aerodynamics chart are actually really giant leaps forward in aero slipperiness. Dropping a coefficient of drag from 0.30 cD to a 0.29 cD is actually a 10X improvement in how smoothly the car can pass through the air. This change continues its exponential level of change as you approach 0.01 — so the benefits of drag reduction are quite powerful. More …
The Mazda CX-5 just went from one of the best crossovers available to perhaps the single best under $30,000. The changes for 2016 include a freshened exterior via a more premium dark-grey grille in a smaller shape, dark-accented wheels and more body-colored accents. Stylish new LED lighting in a cool and expressive design are standard front and rear, plus LED main beam headlamps for the first time. These Adaptive LED Headlights are part of a suite of new safety tech for the CX-5 and a redesigned cabin infotainment setup. Mazda MZD, this new tech package has a larger screen and …
With the all-new 2016 MX-5, we can imagine Mazda had a few design goals in mind. It would definitely need to look: — completely fresh and unable to be mistaken for existing cars — cool and masculine, with a mean streak that shows its performance edge — modern and stylish; a sexy flair to fire up roadster passion We were not completely sure about the design when first shown, but are firm believers now. How cool and sexy and mean is this little roadster in its latest dynamic photos from Spain? Very. Most of these cars on Euro plates are …
Wondered where the ‘LM55’ name of the new Mazda Vision Gran Turismo came from? That was the racing number of the LeMans-winning Mazda 787B from the 1991 LeMans. The only Asian brand to ever win overall via the LMP1 class, this is a story of a racing achievement that still irks powerhouse Toyota, Nissan and Honda to this very day. The 787B is also perhaps the ultimate evolution of the rotary engine — since its evolution beginning in 1588 as chronocles below. Reaching such heights as winning LeMans was an epic moment for rotary power, and conincided with the …
These VGT concepts are an outstanding presence in the automotive world. They push boundaries with a totally blank-slate design remit. Anything is possible, and it is a savory treat for the design and engineering skunkworks in every car company. Mazda’s entry is just-revealed and is called the LM55. This is an LMP1 racer to be played and raced against the absolute quickest cars in the game — and in life. It nods to the 1991 Le Mans LMP1-winning 787B racer — the only Japanese car to ever win the 24-hour race. Interesting themes throughout, and a body that (slightly) recalls …
