The Ford Mustang GTD is already slated to be a very rare sight out on the road with Ford planning to only produce a very small number of them before it ceases production. Ordering one is the equivalent of running through the gauntlet with Ford requiring potential buyers to not only pony up a large chunk of change to own one, but to also get approval from the company itself.
Buyers still willing to go through these hoops were given a special visual treat during Ford’s press conference at the Detroit Auto Show with the unveiling of the Mustang GTD Spirit of America Edition.
The fastest symbol of patriotism you can buy
As the name implies, the Spirit of America model pays homage to the red white, and blue and is strictly an appearance package with the car getting red and blue centerline stripes on the Performance White paintwork. The mirrors and the spoiler plates are painted red with the back of the spoiler getting white Mustang lettering. The interior gets leather seats with black inserts, white inserts, and blue contrast stitching with lightweight titanium being thrown into the mix too.
All of them will also come with the typically optional Performance Package which gives you the full body kit that helped play a role in the GTD lapping the Nurburgring in under seven minutes. The body kit compliments the bespoke chassis and the heavily modified V8 that makes 815 horsepower.
How many will be built?
Ford didn’t dive into specific production numbers for the Spirit of America Edition, but with the standard version already projected to have a wafer-thin production run of under 1,000 units, look for the Spirits to make up a very small chunk of that number with each one also getting a bump in pricing to reflect its increased rarity.
