The all-new 2025 Ford Expedition debuted back in October with the big SUV getting a massive overhaul inside and out. But while traditional consumers were pleased with the changes, the SSV version was still based on old bones. That’s now changing however, with Ford revealing the 2025 Expedition SSV which brings many of the same updates to law enforcement buyers.
Expedition SSV looks to step out of the shadows
The Expedition SSV has been on the market for a long time, but you would be forgiven if you didn’t know that with the smaller and more popular Explorer Police Interceptor commanding the bulk of the attention with the big SUV generally being used for certain roles versus the all-round use that the Explorer sees.
The 2025 Expedition SSV shares the bulk of its exterior styling with the standard model with the big SUV debuting the split rear liftgate and the revamped front fascia with reworked headlights. Steel wheels are standard but police departments looking for undercover vehicles can swap them out for 18-inch aluminum wheels
The SSV also retains the same basic seating layout as the standard model with the SSV being available either with a standard two-row seating layout or the Max variant which adds third-row seating. The rest of the interior also shares alot of its DNA with the civilian version including the large 24-inch digital screen that houses the digital gauge cluster and the infotainment system interface. The center console on the other hand is modified to make room for equipment, computers, and other police gear.
Pursuits are second nature for this SSV
All SSV models are powered by a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 that makes 400 hp and is mated to a 10-speed automatic. Unlike the civilian model, there’s no option for a higher-output engine but the SSV can tow up to 9600 lbs when properly equipped with the Max version seeing its towing capability drop slightly by 600 lbs.
This minor blemish won’t be noticed much by officers out on the field with the Expedition going into battle against similar versions of the Chevrolet Suburban. Pricing wasn’t released but look for the model to have a pricing ladder that’s noticeably different before any potential municipal rebates and other discounts are factored in.
“Duty is at the heart of everything our valued law enforcement customers do, and that’s a standard Expedition SSV is built to meet,” said Ford’s Police Brand Marketing Manager Lindsey Bertino. “We’re very proud to add another all-new vehicle to our police lineup with incredible technology like the panoramic display that departments across the country are looking for.”
The Expedition will help round out the SSV lineup which also features the Transit, Explorer, Mach-E, and F-150. The Mustang coupe is also an unofficial member of the Blue Oval police force but orders for that one are typically done by police departments that need a potent weapon against certain vehicles that would otherwise outmuscle the rest of the lineup
