Jaguar promised that it was out to break the mould and that it would “Copy Nothing” as it attempted to revamp its image and transform into an automaker that would make EVs moving forward. While its initial teaser campaign featured abstract images, strange robot-like supermodels, and plenty of controversy. The one missing piece in the puzzle was a car. Jaguar chose to finally reveal the details (after a leak ruined its plans) by unveiling the all-new Type 00 concept which previews styling that will eventually make its way into a production EV model.
Type 00 is a design study for the future
Jaguar chose to debut the concept during Miami Art Week and it’s readily apparent that artistry and bold colors will be a large part of Jaguar’s new identity moving forward with the company saying that the concept is an “artistic endeavor” that combines color with bold geometric shapes. In the case of the Type 00, it comes in the form of its “Miami Pink paintwork which was supposedly inspired by Miami’s vibrancy though it might look like Jaguar browsed the Barbie catalog and was inspired by her dream cruiser. For those who think the pink paintwork is excessive, the company also rolled out a “London Blue” hued version that had its color partially inspired by the silver blue used on the 60’s era E-Type.
The Type 00 has the classic Grand Touring layout with the long hood being complimented by a stubby fastback rear end with raised haunches. The front end is simplistic in design with the monolith-inspired look being paired with slender headlights and running lights in the lower portion of the front bumper with the front grille being embossed into the panel. The side profile has vertical surfaces with brass ingot pieces hiding a rear camera system that deploys in certain driving situations and makes up for the lack of a rear window. In its place is what Jaguar calls a “pantographic tailgate” that opens up to a small cargo shelf with the rear also featuring full-width taillights.
The interior is noticeably simple in its design with a large oval steering wheel being joined by flat front seats that are bisected by a large brass spine. The Type 00 is a design study and as a result, it has no discernible instruments of any kind with that function being handled by two large screens that rotate up out of the spine with one being placed on each side of the spine. The weird screen layout is only outdone by the materials used in the interior with the wool blend fabric being paired with travertine stone.
What will come of it?
The Type 00 is a pure design study and it’s no surprise that Jaguar chose to not reveal too much about the mechanical hardware lurking underneath the show car presentation. It’s known that the concept and all future Jaguar EV models will be underpinned by the brand’s new JEA platform with the electric powertrain promising to deliver an estimated 430 miles of range and supposedly having the ability to reclaim 200 miles of that range in 15 minutes when hooked up to a fast charger.
It’s not known how much of the concept will carry over to the production version which was last seen in several images that Jaguar released of a heavily camoed version of the concept. A GT is confirmed to be coming first but it remains to be seen if it will have some of the inner swagger and the bold personality that defines the concept Type 00.
