Crosstrek To Debut New Hybrid System

It wasn’t too long ago that Subaru, Toyota, and Mazda formed a triple partnership that would help the three companies create a new family of ICE engines that would deliver more fuel economy and performance. While Mazda and Toyota have so far released only limited details about their engines, Subaru has decided to reveal all the details on its new hybrid system which will make its debut on the Crosstrek in December.

More for your fuel-saving dollar in this Crosstrek

With the rest of the Crosstrek being mostly carried over, there’s not much to talk about when it comes to some of its other redeeming qualities. Instead, the spotlight is shining brightly on the hybrid-equipped 2.5-liter boxer engine. This particular engine was designed specifically for hybrid applications and produces 158 horsepower and 154 lb-ft of torque with a bigger gas tank helping it hold more fuel than a standard model.

The bigger fuel tank plays a role in increasing fuel efficiency with the company saying that the hybrid engine produces a 20% increase in overall fuel economy versus a typical Crosstrek hybrid model. Subaru’s estimates are in the WTLP system of measurement but a 621-mile cruising range on a single tank of gasoline is nothing to sneeze at when viewed by that particular standard. The engine is paired with two front-mounted electric motors with the first one being the main traction motor while the second one is a generator. The setup also allows the Crosstrek to retain its AWD system which is a core selling point for the model in many markets.

When can I buy one?

The new hybrid system is slated to make its debut in Japanese spec Crosstrek models this December where Subaru will use the Japanese home market as an opportunity to get real-world data and see how it measures up in consumer use before expanding to other international markets. In the case of the U.S. look for the model to potentially make its way here sometime next year as the company continues to adjust its plans for green vehicle sales amid unpredictable swings in the EV market.
