The Aston Martin DB12 coupe was a welcome evolution over the aging DB11, with the model getting a massive suite of upgrades designed to enhance the Grand Touring (GT) experience. But what if you’re a sun worshipper wanting some droptop fun to accompany your GT ownership experience? Aston Martin has filled the missing piece to this puzzle with the all-new 2024 DB12 Volante.
DB12 Volante Shares Coupe Underpinnings, But Has Distinct Personality
At first glance, the DB12 Volante and the DB12 coupe appear largely similar, with the exterior styling being largely carried over (save for the folding roof) and the two models being developed alongside each other. However, look under the skin, and you’ll see that key changes lurk under the skin, with the Volante benefitting from revisions to key components to help increase rigidity and torsional stiffness.
The folding fabric top also benefits from a new K-fold design that features a two-stage folding procedure. This folding method allows the top to have a 260 mm height when stacked, which allows the top to maintain a distinct sense of style while also improving the amount of space in the trunk when the top is folded down. When folded, the top is stored underneath a hard tonneau cover, with Aston claiming that it helps improve the car’s overall look while also being able to go up and down in 16 and 14 seconds, respectively.
The interior of the DB12 Volante also shares a lot of core traits with the coupe, with the droptop getting the same reworked 10.25-inch infotainment system that features bundled Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability and adopts a multi-screen layout with a tweaked navigation system also coming along for the ride.
Performance for the 2024 Aston Martin DB12 Volante also comes from the coupe, with a 671-horsepower, 4.0-liter, twin-turbo, V8 lurking under the elegantly styled hood. Aston says that the V8 can help the droptop rocket its way to 62 mph in 3.7 seconds before topping out at 202 mph. These figures are slightly slower than the coupe, but allow the Volante to be firmly in the pack with many of its rivals. An eight-speed automatic will continue to be the sole transmission available.
When Can I Buy One?
After making its debut at Monterey Car Week, the 2024 Aston Martin DB12 Volante will begin production later this year, with the first deliveries set to take place before 2023 comes to a close. The rest of the deliveries will kick off in 2024, and buyers will also have full access to Q and its unique lineup of DB12 accessories and bespoke appointments, with some of them being exclusive to the Volante.
Pricing information wasn’t released but look for the figures here to reflect the premium that comes with the droptop.
