Lexus Gives Trail Ready 2024 GX Newfound Vigor, Injects More Capability With Overtrail Model

Lexus had a double feature regarding vehicular debuts this week, with the 2024 Lexus TX aiming to appeal to urban-focused family buyers. However, what if you’re a utility buyer that craves more trail-ready capability in your SUV purchase? Lexus thinks that the 2024 Lexus GX lineup will be the perfect trail warrior, especially for buyers that can’t step up into a larger LX model.

2024 GX Goes Back To Its Roots With Updates

The appearance of the 2024 Lexus GX brings significant changes to the model, which has not seen any major updates since its last significant revision back in 2010. Barack Obama was president back then, and the GX boldly waved its V8 engine like a badge of honor. Alot has changed since then, and it all starts with the exterior styling, which adopts a more rugged appearance, with the 2024 model getting a new front end that incorporates the spindle grille into the front fascia. Hard creases also define the design, and the rear fascia not only features a new lightbar but it also features a power liftgate that comes with a separately opening rear window.

Buyers will be able to choose from 11 different colors, but the bulk of the exterior updates will be focused on the all-new Overtrail variant. As the name implies, the Overtrail lineup brings more trail-ready gear to the GX, with the model getting an aluminum skidplate, black trim accents, 18-inch wheels, with 33-inch all-terrain tires. Buyers can add several optional extras to the GX, including Crawl Control, Downhill Assist Control, and a 3D multi-terrain monitor.

Luxury and New Technology Make GX A More Refined Beast

With the exterior styling doing its best impression of a futuristic overlander, the interior goes above and beyond in coddling occupants. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is now standard, and the infotainment system sheds its antiquated 10.4-inch screen in lieu of an all-new 14.0-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto both coming standard. The screen benefits from new analog dials and software that’s slicker and faster than before.

There are still plenty of traditional switches and controls for items like the transfer case and the differential, but the screen does move more features into the screen than before. The six-passenger model gets second-row captain’s chairs, but the seven-passenger model gets bench seats for both the second and third rows. The front seats get standard heat and cooling, while the second-row bench can be equipped with optional seat heat. Semi-aniline leather and NuLuxe upholstery give the GX a modern edge and also help build a noticeable boundary between itself and the larger LX.

Goodbye V8, Smaller V6 Is Here To Stay

Performance for the 2024 Lexus GX comes from a 349 horsepower, 3.4-liter,twin-turbocharged V6, with the V8 being retired for the new model year. The GX also rides on Toyota’s GA-F platform, which is lighter than before and also plays a role in improving the GX’s rigidity. A 10-speed automatic is also newly added, and it allows the GX to tow between 6,000 to 8,000 lbs depending on how the SUV is configured. A hybrid version is coming as well, but that model won’t be available at launch and will instead appear a short time later.

Lexus claims that the setup will also help improve fuel economy, but the brand only chose to reveal the combined figure, which measures in at 17 mpg. City and freeway fuel mileage numbers will be released at a later date.

When Can I Buy One?

The 2024 Lexus GX will be available in six different trim levels: Premium/Premium+, Luxury/Luxury+, Overtrail/Overtrail+, with buyers choosing from 11 different colors. The Overtrail models will be two-tone only, but other GX models will have access to monotone hues. Lexus didn’t reveal formal pricing for the 2024 GX yet but look for the model to start at just under $60,000.
