It wasn’t too long ago that the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado lineup debuted, and the ZR2 model was also one of the models in attendance. However, its hardcore relative, the 2024 ZR2 Bison, remained a camera-shy subject, with the model not joining the initial wave. That’s changing, however, with Chevrolet now unveiling the souped-up truck to help flesh out its mid-size truck lineup.
ZR2 Bison Doubles Down On AEV Performance
This latest iteration of the Bison follows the recipe that was laid out by its predecessor, with the ZR2 providing the core template for American Expedition Vehicles engineers to work with. AEV builds on it by adding a number of AEV-sourced accessories, including revised front and rear bumpers, increased underbody protection, larger fender flares, and 17-inch beadlock wheels with 35-inch all-terrain tires. The spare tire has also been moved from under the truck to a standard tire carrier that’s mounted on the bed.
Meanwhile, the interior gets rubberized all-weather floor mats as well as AEV logos on the front seats. The interior also benefits from some of the broader upgrades that were added to the rest of the Colorado lineup, including higher-quality materials, a new lineup of infotainment systems, and improved passenger room for the cabin.
AEV Upgrades Are Ready For Any Occasion
Performance for all 2024 ZR2 Bison models comes from the high-output version of the 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic, two-speed transfer case, four-wheel drive, and a built-in Baja mode are also part of the deal, while the suspension benefits from a 1.5-inch lift that raises ground clearance to 12.2 inches.
All of the Bison’s upgrades and extra fortification add some beef to the Colorado with a BIson model weighing in at 5,625 lbs which is more than a standard ZR2 and its 4,949 lb curb weight. That’s to be expected, and the extra weight also impacts fuel economy, but Chevrolet was not ready to reveal the full extent of this impact in today’s announcement. Instead, Chevrolet confirmed that the extra upgrades eat into some of the truck’s capabilities, with the payload rating shrinking down to 1,050 lbs while towing drops to 5,500 lbs.
