The Chevrolet Camaro gained a new lease on life when the model was resurrected for the 2010 model year. The retro inspired muscle car breathed new life into the Camaro and helped launch GM back into the muscle car wars. However, the end is once again coming for the Camaro with Chevy confirming that it will be pulling the plug on the Camaro after the 2024 model year.
Camaro Reaches The End Of The Road, For Now…
The Camaro’s departure comes as the result of sliding sales in recent years with a refresh in 2014 and a revamp in 2016 doing little to stop the slide in sales. However, Chevrolet is celebrating the Camaro’s departure with a special Collectors Model which will help retire the nameplate. While the few teaser pics that Chevrolet released don’t show too much, it appears that it will be available on the ZL1 with a unique paint color and other accents being part of the package. The package is also slated to be offered on the RS and SS models too with Chevy claiming that the model will servs as a humble reminder of the fifth and sixth gen Camaro including its original “Panther” program name.
Scott Bell Global VP for Chevrolet confirmed that while this is goodbye for now, it’s not the end of the Camaro story stating “While we are not announcing an immediate successor today, rest assured, this is not the end of Camaro’s story.” This brief statement could indicate that the brand is preparing an electrified muscle car but we’ll have to wait awhile to see if that’s happening or not. In the meantime the Camaro name will continue to be used in the racing world with the name and the body design being used in NASCAR, IMSA, NHRA and other racing championships.
When Can I Buy One?
Chevrolet confirmed that the Collector’s Edition will go on sale this summer with Chevrolet poised to reveal full pricing information closer to that time. Production of the 2024 model year will be brief with Chevrolet confirming that the 2024 model will end production in January of 2024 making this batch of Camaros relatively small when compared to prior model years. The Camaro’s departure as well as the Challenger and Charger’s exit will make the 2024 Ford Mustang the lone muscle car remaining once again but it remains to be seen what happens when Ford eventually gets to making the next generation Mustang.
