Hyundai has shared plenty about the upcoming Ioniq 5 EV ever since it was formally revealed several years ago. The EV will play a key role in Hyundai’s attempts at supercharging its quest towards EV dominance, and it will be an innovative offering thanks to a few slices of new technology. But the one thing that we haven’t heard is range, but that’s changing with Hyundai revealing the final range numbers for the EV.
Two Range Ratings Points To Future Ioniq 5 Variant
The big surprise here is that Hyundai chose to reveal two range numbers for the model, which appear to signal that the shorter range Ioniq 5 will eventually appear here in the U.S. But before we dive down that rabbit hole, we might as well talk about the Ioniq 5 model that will be arriving first, which is the one with the single 225 hp electric motor and the 77.4 kWh battery pack. Hyundai claims that the Ioniq 5 will come with a range of 303 miles per charge, and not only does it make this version of the car the most efficient in the family, but it also manages to do better than a few current EV offerings.
If you want more performance and all-wheel drive, buyers can add a second electric motor which boosts output to 320 hp but causes the range to dip slightly to 256 miles per charge which is still commendable even with the extra performance on hand. As for the short-range version, its appearance in the EPA’s testing was a surprise, especially since Hyundai claimed that the U.S. would get long-range versions of the Ioniq 5 only with this one being reserved for global markets. But the EPA testing appears to show that Hyundai could perhaps be thinking about bringing this variant to specific markets in the U.S.
If that’s the case, these models will come equipped with a smaller 58 kWh battery pack and a single electric motor which allows them to get 220 miles per charge. That’s the shortest in the model family. Still, that initial disadvantage could be negated if this model is sold in markets like California, Chicago, or New York, where the urban centers have solid charging infrastructure that can support the Ioniq 5 during a typical commute through town.
When Can I Buy An Ioniq 5?
Hyundai didn’t dive too deep into a specific timeline but confirmed that the Ioniq 5 will go on sale sometime in 2022. When it does, the model will only be available in 17 states at launch. Hyundai didn’t name which of these seventeen states will have the honor of selling them, but you can bet on California being on the list, which is mainly due to the unique approach that the state has taken when it comes to promoting green vehicles.
Eventually, Hyundai will expand the Ioniq 5’s reach to more locales, but we’ll have to wait and see when Hyundai chooses to do that.
