The Nissan Rogue recently received a radical refresh for the 2021 model year that saw many aspects of the popular SUV benefit from some much-welcomed attention. But while the bulk of the SUV won praise, the carryover 2.5 liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder had about as much oomph as a bag of moldy cheese and was not a Rouge strong suit. Nissan is out to change that though introducing an all-new turbocharged model into the Rogue lineup.
Smaller Is Indeed Better
At first glance, it might be hard to see where Nissan is going here with the new 1.5-liter three-cylinder having fewer cylinders and less size than the outgoing engine. However, look at the raw numbers, and you’ll discover that this engine does indeed produce more power, with Nissan reps claiming that the mill is good for 201 hp and 225 lb-ft of torque. That’s a significant increase over the outgoing motor, and it also adds three extra mpg to the Rogue’s combined fuel economy figure, with the revised total now sitting at 33 mpg. The three-cylinder comes with Nissan’s VC (Variable Compression) technology which we first met on the Infiniti QX50 back in 2019. Nissan claims that the system has received some updates since then and does a far better job of delivering excellent performance when drivers demand it and seamlessly transitioning to a fuel economy-focused experience in certain driving situations.
An all-new version of Nissan’s Xtronic automatic transmission is paired to the engine, and it now incorporates a twin oil pump system to help it cope better with a wide range of driving demands. Oh, and did we forget to mention that Nissan managed to cram all of this into a compact three-cylinder engine? (well played Nissan, well played.)
