Ford Announces 2022 Maverick Hybrid Fuel Economy Numbers, Beats Most Compact Cars

A big selling point for the 2022 Ford Maverick when it first appeared on the scene was the high fuel economy figures that Ford was targeting, with company execs claiming that the truck could get 40 mpg. Fast forward a few months, and the EPA has now released the official numbers, which not only beat Ford’s projections but also managed to outclass an entire segment of automobiles too.

Ford Maverick Hybrid Gains Two Extra MPG, Puts Compact Cars On Notice

The official figures for the 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid are 42 mpg city, 33 mpg freeway, and 37 mpg combined. While an extra two mpg in the city figure might seem like figurative window dressing at first glance, that translates to about 500 miles of range before the Maverick needs to pull over for a drink. This is a big deal in the pickup segment, and it even allows the Maverick to be more efficient than some compact cars.

All Maverick Hybrid models are powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder mated to a small electric motor and an efficiency-focused electronic CVT transmission. Like other hybrid models, the Maverick lugs and a small lithium-ion battery pack are located beneath the rear seat. The result is 191 hp which allows the Maverick to have confidence in city driving situations.

Prepare For High Demand

With impressive fuel economy and its baked-in DIY flexibility, it’s no surprise that early demand for the Maverick Hybrid is high, with Ford revealing that the order books for the Maverick Hybrid are nearly complete, with the last remaining spots will be filled in November. Ford also announced that the next round of ordering for the Maverick Hybrid won’t open up till next summer, so interested buyers will have to act quickly to snag a Maverick Hybrid for themselves. Ford revealed that it will start Hybrid deliveries in January 2022.

But for those that either missed the boat (or prefer something with more towing credentials), Ford still has the standard Maverick model available. This variant is on dealer lots now and comes with a 2.0 liter Ecoboost four-cylinder engine which allows the truck to tow 4,000 lbs (versus the hybrid’s 2,000 lbs.) It also comes with an eight-speed automatic and optional all-wheel drive for winter driving. However, its fuel economy numbers are in lockstep with some of its rivals like the Hyundai Santa Cruz, with this model getting 22/25/29 mpg.

Pricing For the 2022 Maverick Hybrid starts at $21,490, which can get you inside a base XL model. Climbing the trim ladder does cause prices to follow accordingly, but the hybrid still emerges as a better deal than the Maverick Ecoboost, with that model starting at $22,575 for a front-wheel-drive model. Adding all-wheel drive costs $3,305, and that’s before you factor in higher trim levels.
