The new Mercedes-Maybach strategy is to offer multiple special variants of production Mercedes models. It makes more sense than the stand-alone Maybach brand — but appeals to the same types of people.
People who want/need to one-up their wealthy neighbors.
Yes, this S650 looks quite different than an S550 Cabriolet. It is a gilded, glittery dream versus that plebian weakling!
But the S650 basically looks and feels exactly like the S65 AMG. Same grille and lower brightwork garnish, same seats and cabin with stenciled woods.
Different wheels and perhaps different suspension tuning for the slightly-quicker V12TT engine variant also mark out the Maybach S650 vs S65.
But really, the new Maybach upgrade is a shortcut to having every option as standard. Including that elusive F-U factor that shows just who is boss.
But really, wouldn’t a Bentley or a Rolls-Royce prove that a bit more convincingly?
