When we think of cars from the future, the aesthetic is generally minimalist and slightly brutal with its form language. This can be typical normal shapes like hatchbacks and pickups and mid-size sedans — but all designed with a lean and crisp look that eschews frivolous bulging and chrome in favor of minimalism.

Will this be what cars in the future actually look like? Probably not. Just like we do not dress in spandex StarTrek outfits or one-piece tracksuits in 2015. But those are still the most popular uniform for most hyper-futuristic hollywood movie.

Cars that would fit in that lean and style-pure future? Slightly hard-lined, but sexy in their own way.

The 2006 Mitsubishi Concept D5 fits in that spaceship world nicely.

Its looks are deliberately subtle on the shot stand, with grey over dark-grey plastic cladding to make the box-van proportions the star of the show.

This look made it very faithfully onto the fifth-generation Delica van — which is arguably one of Mitsu’s best-loved cars throughout the world.

Would it sell in the US? Would US Mitsubishi dealers choose to bring it over?

Probably not in high volumes, and almost definitely not — respectively.

But there is something deeply cool and futuristic about the look. Almost 10 years later — those square LED headlights are now a key style element of the new Ford F-150 Platinum.

The Delica is so anti-cool that it even tears up woodland rally trails in bad-ass, mid-engine fashion….!
