How ironic — or at least mildly amusing — that Toyota would take the GT86 rallying before Subaru and its BRZ.
But then you realize: Subaru has their all-star WRX rally hero already in place.
For Toyota, the GT86 and Scion FR-S program is not just an amazing rear-drive sportscar for a new generation of drivers. It is a platform for all aspects of fun and racing, including Rallye Deutschland.
Prepared by TMG and available for sale to other race teams for about $120,000 — the GT86 CS-R3 is FIA-approved and clearly hungry for speed. The blat of the huge coffee-can exhaust and the completely stripped out racing cabin set the tone for fun in the woods.
But look deeper, and there is chassis bracing everywhere, a roll cage fit for Pikes Peak, and a six-speed sequential gearbox for the 250-horsepower engine running sans turbos, but with lots of other goodies.
The SEMA crowd can have all their bodykits and air-ride stance cars —- the TMG GT86 CS R3 is the real deal, and the one for rear-drive really thrills.
The rally GT86 is for sale from TMG in Germany.
2015 Toyota GT86 CS-R3 Rally Car
PRICING REVEALED FOR GT86 CS-R3
Wednesday 20 August 2014
TOYOTA Motorsport GmbH is pleased to announce a competitive pricing structure for its new GT86 CS-R3 rally car.
For orders confirmed before February 2015, the new rear-wheel drive rally car will be sold in standard kit form, in tarmac specification, for €79,000 plus VAT. After 31 January 2015, the price will be €84,000 plus VAT.
The CS-R3 kit includes all essential mechanical elements such as rally-specific items, complete drivetrain and all OE parts including bodyshell with safety cage for assembly by the customer.
An option list, including gravel suspension, racing seats and other options will be published in the coming weeks.
The CS-R3 will be offered for sale to private customers and TOYOTA dealerships, providing a cost-effective way to enjoy the thrills of competitive rallying, from local events up to and including the WRC.
It conforms to the FIA’s R3 regulation, which allows modification of its two-litre boxer engine. Changes to the software and hardware are part of an extensive development programme and the final car is targeted to deliver 240-250hp.
Throughout the development process, TMG has focused on reducing weight whilst delivering safety, reliability and fun.
A sequential shift six-speed transmission and limited slip rear differential give a feeling of true high performance while an FIA-homologated safety cage has been designed and calculated, allowing weight optimisation.
After almost a year of development, TMG will put the CS-R3 through its paces as a zero car on Rallye Deutschland, which takes place around Trier this weekend.
The CS-R3 will have its own dedicated competition in 2015; the HJS TMG CS-R3 Trophy which is planned to run within the German Rally Championship structure.
HJS, a supplier of racing exhausts to the CS-R3, will coordinate and manage the HJS TMG CS-R3 Trophy, which will see up to 10 of the rear-wheel-drive cars competing in seven rallies around Germany.
A GT86 CS-R3 show car will be on display throughout Rallye Deutschland at the TMG area within the Trier service park. Media are invited to visit the TMG area for interviews and photos.
