Backup cameras are a feature that many of us have taken for granted with the safety feature becoming a must-have item in the minds of many car buyers (this author included.) However, in the case of Maserati, the digital rear view is responsible for a recall with the Italian luxury car company recalling over 28,000 vehicles due to the radio potentially messing with the cameras.
Views and tunes don’t mix
As mentioned, 28,000 vehicles are covered under this recall with virtually all of their models covered from the 2021-2025 model years. Out of this bunch are 2022-2025 MC20 supercars with just over 1,000 of them (coupe and Cielo) being impacted by the recall. The issue in question stems not from the rear camera itself but instead, it’s the radio which can interfere with the signal coming from the rear camera due to a software glitch. This loss of signal can cause the image to not pop up on the infotainment system which can make backingup your Italian luxury car a stressful experience.
In addition to the MC20 other Maserati models affected by the recall include the 2023-25 Grecale (8,021), 2024 Granturismo (751), 2024 GranCabrio (71), 2021-24 Levante (10,901), 2021-24 Ghibli (4,721) and 2021-24 Quattroporte (4,721).
Maserati is planning a fix
With the problem sounding complex at first glance, owners will be pleased to hear that not only is Maserati planning to fix the problem but that the solution is actually pretty simple with the company fixing the issue via an over-the-air (OTA) software update. This would mean that the bulk of the owners impacted would not even have to take their Maserati into a dealership but local dealer reps we spoke with said that they are prepared to help any owners (especially of older vehicles) update their vehicle since those units will require a manual update which is delivered via a USB cable.
Maserati is far from the only company dealing with tech-related recalls with a growing number of automakers issuing similar recalls as software and driver assistance features become more integrated into the ownership experience. However, the company is also trying to add a newfound jolt to its sales numbers with the Italian firm struggling to reign in a broader slide in sales as it prepares to morph into an all-electric brand. The first wave of Folgore models are expected to arrive very soon and the last thing Maserati needs is a sweeping recall like this to steal some of the spotlight away from those key models.
