How to Finally Get Started on that Garage Clear Out

Clearing out the garage: an age old home project that most homeowners have to get round to at some point. That being said, garages are quite large spaces, and can be filled with all kinds of stuff from years gone by.

If you’re technically minded and love a bit of tinkering, there could even be all kinds of stains and drag marks on the floor too!

But if you’re willing to take the plunge this year and finally get a move on, we’ve got some tips that’ll help out. Here’s how to approach a garage clear out in a way that’ll actually get the space neat and tidy again.

Minimize Your Spare Parts Box

Have you got various metal shelving units in your garage, all of which are covered in boxes filled with old car parts? Maybe some are in good condition, while some are rusted or still coated in oil? Then it’s time to break things down and start minimizing.

You don’t have to get rid of all the parts, but it’s best to try and work down to one single box. If you like, be sure to invest in a sturdy, extra large version you can fit more things in, but still won’t take up more than its fair share of room.

Some parts could even be worth a lot of money, especially if they’re no longer coming fresh off the manufacturer’s line. Head online to see if you could pick up some spare cash before throwing anything out.

Recycle That Old Car

If the main issue in your garage is an old, broken down, and potentially even written off car, getting in the way, look into car recycling. You shouldn’t have to go too far to find a suitable service or plant for this either.

Through recycling, you can finally get that wreckage off your hands, and you won’t have to worry about where any of the metal ends up either. If you’re not willing to fix the car up, and it’s not worth it to scrap it for parts, and you’re not sure about the junkyard either, this is a quick and easy way to finally say goodbye and get it gone.

Tackle the Repair Zones

Before you get to work on anything else in the garage, highlight the repair zones that could be around and fix those up first.

Be sure to tackle a misaligned or poorly hanging garage door before you fit more storage in there, or indeed, try to get your new car in the space.

Similarly, if there are cracks in the floor or the ceiling seems to be bending in, you could have a structural issue on your hands, and that needs investigating ASAP.

A garage clear out is a great thing to do, but it does take a lot to get started! Make sure you’re making this as easy for yourself as you can with tips like these. And remember, repairs come before any new purchases!
