Ford Extends Free EV Charger Program To Give More People Chargers

Back in September Ford debuted its new Power Promise program which was supposed to give EV customers a free home charging station for their EV purchase along with bundled free installation for the lease or purchase of a Ford F-150 Lighting, Mustang Mach-E, or the E-Transit commercial van. This offer was supposed to expire this month, but Ford confirmed that the program will be extended to March 31, 2025 in an attempt to reach more customers looking to embrace electrification.

Extension serves two distinct purposes

The extension of the program comes as Ford continues to struggle with sliding demand for some of its EV vehicles with the company already being forced to do several production stops on the F-150 Lightning. Despite these setbacks though, the company says that the extension comes off of record sales for EVs during 2024. As a result, the newly extended program will continue to be a potent financial incentive for customers and it comes with 24/7 support from a dedicated team of Ford advisors as well as an eight-year/100,000 mile high voltage battery warranty among other perks.

In addition to addressing the more functional aspects of EV ownership, the program is also attempting to rewrite consumer perceptions about charging and is attempting to show them that they can still charge in the comfort of their own home versus traveling out to a public charging station that might be occupied by a vehicle or have to wait in lines for a spot to open up.

Ford on track to potentially outsell Tesla

Programs like this one are part of a broader plan by Ford to try and establish a sales network that could allow it to ultimately outpace and outsell Tesla. Ford is already on track to do so when you look at the finer details with the Mustang Mach-E continuing to produce sales while the E-transit has become a key offering for commercial buyers especially in certain vehicle niches.

As for the F-150 Lightning, it lost some sales ground to the Cybertruck but with the model struggling to overcome a growing pool of recalls and some of the fallout from Elon Musk’s personal activities beginning to sour the mood of some of the company’s most diehard loyalists, the Lightning is in prime positon to make up precious ground. In the meantime, look for Ford to continue to explore other avenues to prop up demand for EVs while also adjusting to changing market conditions with an expanded focus on hybrid and PHEV models.
