Ford’s Three-Row SUV Bites The Dust As Company Rethinks EV Plans

Ford’s recent pivot in its electrification plans is starting to become more defined as the company confirms that its upcoming three-row EV SUV has bit the dust as hybrids and PHEVs rapidly take center stage in the company’s future sales projections. The SUV itself will live on, but now as a hybrid-equipped offering.

Hybrid replaces EV in upcoming SUV

A three-row hybrid SUV might share some of its DNA with the Ford Explorer

The confirmation came during a media briefing that the company hosted with the move being the latest sign that hybrids are once again taking center stage at Ford. The company didn’t release a timetable when this three-row SUV would appear but the SUV would be a welcome addition to Ford’s utility lineup and also be a source of profits as the company is continuing to eat losses from its “Model E” EV business.

Ford said a key factor in its decision was mainly due to the cost of battery materials with prices for these materials going up over the past few years. In addition, the company also acknowledged that the second wave of EV buyers that came after the early adopters are more focused on the cost of a vehicle and want something that can deliver range but at a lower price point with style and the notion of being first to have it not being on their priority list.

“Today’s electric vehicle consumers are more cost-conscious than early adopters, looking to electric vehicles as a practical way to save money on fuel and maintenance, as well as time by charging at home,” the company revealed in a news release. “This, coupled with scores of new electric vehicle choices hitting the market over the next 12 months and rising compliance requirements, has amplified pricing pressures.”

Ford not giving up on EVs

Ford is not giving up on EVs, but it will be reducing spending and refocusing its efforts on certain vehicle segments.

While Ford admitted that it’s adjusting its strategies to add more hybrid models to its portfolio, the company is not exiting the EV market entirely with The F-150 Lightning and Ford Mustang Mach-E continuing to be offered to customers. However, spending for models like these has been cut by 10% and Ford will now be focusing on certain vehicle segments first. That includes the commercial segment, with the company confirming that it will be releasing a second electrified commercial van to be sold alongside the Transit EV with two more pickups making their debut in 2027.
