Road Test Review – 2024 Genesis GV60 – Genesis Attempts To Break EV Mold With GV60

The Genesis GV60 is the brand’s attempt to break the mold in the EV segment. Combining futuristic styling with impressive amounts of range and technology, the compact CUV is supposed to be the spearhead into the broader segment for Genesis. However, recent slowdowns in growth and demand for EVs are making Genesis consider a strong push into hybrid vehicles.

That said, the GV60 Magma is also showing a glimpse into what a potential performance model would look like for the brand and if the 2024 Genesis GV60 can help provide a solid enough foundation, it will help give the upcoming Magma model a chance to grow and become a vital part of the model lineup.

GV60 still draws stares wherever it goes

The exterior styling of the 2024 GV60 has a crisp look and while the GV60 has been around for a few years, the styling still looks modern with the front fascia featuring pixelated headlights that flow and curve into the front fenders with the front grille panel having a smooth look that works with the aggressively styled lower front bumper. The side profile is designed to slip through the air and it flows smoothly into the smoothed-out back end with the taillights being seamlessly integrated into the rear liftgate.

A prominent change that buyers will notice is that a new set of 19-inch wheels are now standard with the 20-inch hoops now being the middle option for buyers. Our Performance grade model arrived with the 21-inch wheels which are now the biggest wheels that the GV60 will have. The wheels also play a role in how much range buyers will get but we’ll touch more on that topic a little later.

Modern interior is not as spacious as its brand mates

Slip inside the GV60 and you’ll find that while the cabin is not as spacious as the bigger GV70 and GV80 it makes up for it by offering a more futuristic theme with several neat features to help it stand out. The center console shifter flips into a crystal ball motif when the GV60 is turned off with the same ball also glowing red at night. The odd-looking steering wheel is packed with buttons and a fully digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster is paired with a matching 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system for a seamless techy look.

The second row is reflective of the GV60’s size with taller passengers experiencing tight headroom though legroom is actually pretty decent thanks to the wide floor. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard but only with a wired connection. Look for the GV60 to eventually switch to a wireless setup to fall in line with other EVs that come with wireless connections standard. The only wireless feature that the GV60 does have is a phone charging pad. Rear cargo space is cramped but that’s a consequence of the GV60’s compact dimensions.

Performance is very impressive

Performance for the 2024 GV60 comes from two electric powertrains with the standard model being powered by a single rear electric motor that makes 225 hp. Most buyers however will go for either the Advanced or the Performance model with these models getting a second front-mounted motor that boosts horsepower to 314 and 429 hp respectively. Our Performance model arrived with the latter figure and it’s enough to rocket the GV60 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds.

The Performance model also gets a reworked adaptive suspension to sharpen its handling manners with these efforts being noticeable in sharp corners. The GV60 also proved to be a good companion in urban driving with the suspension doing a good job soaking up most of Michigan’s rough tarmac despite the bigger wheels delivering a firm ride. Range depends on model with the Advanced getting 248 miles of driving range with performance models like our tester seeing that figure get bumped down to 235 miles. The rear-wheel-drive models get the most range with these models getting 294 miles of range. When hooked up to a DC fast charging station, the battery can go from 10 to 80 percent charged in just 18 minutes.

Value Quotient

Pricing for the 2024 Genesis GV60 starts at $52,000 before destination and fees are applied. Advanced models are the proverbial middle of the road option with these models starting at just over $60,000. Our Performance grade tester started at $69,950 with minor options pushing the price to just over $70,000.

This pricing is on par with other EVs in its segment but buyers are better off with the Advanced model since it delivers a more linear power delivery while also doing it at a slightly more apporachable price point. Of course when the Magma model comes out, all bets are off since that model will bring Ioniq N performance into a felt-lined tuxedo. In the meantime look for the GV60 to continue to impress buyers and stave off the talk of a refresh for a bit longer.
