The 2015 Dodge Charger is a focused update and improvement — maintaining the giant cabin, huge power options and enhancing it up and down the nine-model range.
The SRT Hellcat and its 707HP supercharged HEMI is hoovering up most of the headlines so far, buttwo questions before lusting after just the Hellcat:
— Is that engine the biggest upgrade in creating such a comfortable and tech-savvy new full-size car?
— And more importantly, is the Hellcat and its $64,000 base price, 204-mph Vmax and 3.7-second sprint to 60-mph the true sweet spot of the range?
First, the biggest advantage of all the new Chargers: their slick and rapid eight-speed automatic from ZF. Paddle shifts, sport programming at the touch of a button, and expert adaptive shift algorithms? This new box drops sprint times drastically, improves fuel economy and creates in-gear surge like nothing else short of the E63 AMG.
Secondly, the sweet spot of the range. Supercharged power and on-demand burnouts are not a Hellcat exclusive, nor is its performance-tuned chassis and exterior style.
There is a king in the range in the form of the 6.4-liter R/T Scat Pack, carrying a well-equipped base price of $40,000. This dreamy naturally-aspirated engine is a the real bull’s-eye of the new Chargers, proven during a drive around the Texas Motor Speedway the other week.
Rear-drive, 485-horsepower and the pure, supercharger-free roar of a big-bore racing engine in its prime. This is 115 extra horsepower over the 5.7-liter Hemi, yet delivers 25-mpg on the highway.
Sprint pace? A stonking 4.3-seconds to 60-mph — repeatable all day, by any skill level of driver. Just nail it and hang on!
Far less wheelspin and uncontrollable torque than the Hellcat, but thisclose to being as rapid and even purer from the driver’s seat.
We love this Scat Pack Charger for its engine, its new cabin, and its incredible refinement and handling balance.
The Charger Scat Pack is a real Goliath of a giant-killer — literally.
With six more inches of rear legroom in back than the M5 or E63 or CTS-V — but all the intensity of those four-door supercars. Try finding almost 42-inches of back seat legroom in anything short of a the new S600 Maybach.
The style of the nose and tail matches the Hellcat, but switches the logo in the grille to a Scat Pack script, and the growling thundercat on the fenders becomes a 392 Hemi badge.
There are five choices of 20-inch wheels from which to select, and the only exterior options are a $1500 black roof, similarly-priced moonroof and two choices of leather seats for around $2,000 extra.
There is a grippy argument for the standard tech-fabric cloth interior atop these giant racing thrones, though.
All in: this incredible speed, value and style makes Scat Pack our new favorite Charger.
But truthfully, they are all remarkably sexy, quick and stylish with the best-of-2015 LEDs all around, a smooth and silent new cabin, and roominess that no other full-size car under $100k can touch.
