The 288 GTO is a very special, and very important Ferrari.
Inspiring the new 488 GTB name for the latest turbo V8 engine, the 288 GTO was easily the highest-performance hypercar of the 1980s. Until…. the F40 of 1987.
The F40 completely shaded the 288 GTO’s accomplishments via a simple restyle over largely carry-over engineering from the 288 GTO.
Originally envisioned for the Group B racing series known for its ‘no rules’ attitude toward max power outputs, the 288 GTO is definitely a legend for those in the know.
Hopefully the cognoscenti are in attendence of the Villa Erba RM Auction this Spring, and fingers crossed that the Euro is worth a bit more by then. Why? Current European buyers are finding their money able to buy about 20-percent less than ever before.
