The 2016 Taurus is rumored to ditch its jumbo Volvo-based platform in favor of an enlarged Fusion chassis. The current Fusion has been a total savior for Ford as rival Chevy Malibu and Chrysler 200 have nose-dived in recent years.
Originally designed for the Mazda6, this platform is lighter and has been heavily tweaked to meet all the latest crash and emission standards. These updates continue for 2016, as the Taurus is markedly larger in every dimension than the mid-size models.
So what will the new Taurus look like?
Today’s reveal of the updated European-market Mondeo also includes a variety of fascinating design sketches. Not only are these a full generation ahead of anything in the current Fusion or Mondeo, they are advanced enough to show a future Mustang-inspired sedan profile.
Various takes on the future Ford sedan design are shown here, with at least five unique concepts shown here for the exterior, and a half-dozen more inside.
It usually takes thousands of sketches to get to a final sheetmetal design, so none of these are exactly indicative of the 2016 Taurus’s design. Even so, you would be wrong to bet against these ideas becoming real in the mid-term future.
We colored one of the sexiest sketches from grey to red digitally, just so the origin of this is clear.
The new Taurus concepts are especially far-along in the cabin, where the renderings show a near-production look at Ford’s sedan design vision of the future.
