There was a time when the Hybrid models in many car ranges were much more of a style and eco-conscience type of choice. The biggest example of this paradox of the Hybrid actually being a far worse machine, but much more successful with consumers, is the Lexus RX350 versus the RX450h.

The RX Hybrid is so ubiquitous that it is easy to forget the standard model still exists!

But is it a better car? That is very open to debate – as the Lexus system of AWD with electric power to the back axle is less-than-helpful in many slick road or wet grass driving scenarios, when the front-wheel gasoline power easily overwhelms any meaningful contribution from the back. It will just spin its front wheels endlessly – exposing that the RX Hybrid’s AWD setup is heavily, heavily biased toward efficiency versus true crossover capability.

The latest Infiniti Direct Hybrid system is quite different in many ways versus the Lexus, but to the point above, the QX60 AWD Hybrid sends power from its central transmission both rearwards and to the front – using both electric and gasoline power sources simultaneously.

This ingenious solution also allows the QX60 Hybrid to be offered in both FWD or AWD – which is pretty remarkable.

The efficiency benefit is close to 5MPG extra in both real-world urban and highway settings, and sprint pace is mostly a wash between the QX60 3.5-liter V6 and the Hybrids – they all take about 7.0 seconds regardless of drivetrain or engine setup.

How? The Hybrid runs the all-new supercharged 2.5-liter engine as its primary power source – delivering only about 20 horsepower less than the much-larger V6, and an even lower torque plateau than the V6 as well. Add in the QX60 Hybrid’s silent coasting and in-town driving thanks to the batteries, and it is all win for the Hybrid.

What is the cost of the Hybrid upgrade? It bumps pricing from about a $43,000 base to about a $45,000 base versus the V6, but that seems to be the only demerit.

Back seat space and cargo capacity are shared across all models, so there is only up-side in the capability contest, as well.

Overall, a very cutting-edge mechanical package that is wrapped in some subtle but highly appealing curves outside and in. The QX60 is on my short list of seven-seaters to recommend to friends who are all plopping out kids like clockwork this year – even ahead of my old stand-by for class-best, the Mazda CX-9.

A fun game is to recommend both the QX60 Hybrid and the Mercedes-Benz GL350 CDI diesel.

“Go drive them both,” I say with a smirk….

A week later…

“Yes, we liked them both a lot!  The Benz is more appealing… until we saw the $90,000 price.”

As this point, the merits of the QX60 AWD Hybrid’s $50,000 loaded pricing come into stark relief. It is the best seven-seat luxury crossover package out there this year.
